Car, motorcycle, trike?
The Polaris Slingshot is all at once, which is why it is classified differently in different countries and even in the U.S. states. Despite the presence of a complete car engine and gearbox, two seats, steering wheel and even a media system, the certification authorities do not consider it a car.
Still, it is possible to drive a Slingshot in most U.S. states with a regular driver's license. In fact, it is a hybrid of a car and a motorcycle, a kind of centaur, the border of which goes right through the interior. To avoid misunderstandings, Polaris decided that it is a motorcycle, which is proved by the sticker between the seats, which means it is better to wear motorcycle helmets - you never know what can fly off the road.
Beneath the plastic attachment panels there is a steel space frame, fragments of which can be seen on the sides. At the front, the car is suspended on double wishbones, at the back - a single-sided swingarm, on which the drive wheel of increased diameter (20 inches against 18 in front) is installed through the belt drive. The transmission until recently was offered only manual, but now there is an automatic.
Polaris Slingshot has very impressive dimensions. It is 3,800 mm long, 1971 mm wide and 1,318 mm high. Wheelbase is 2667 mm and ground clearance is 127 mm. GM Ecotec 2.4 liter engine produces 173 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 225 "newtons" of torque at 4200 rpm. And it is with curb weight only 783 kilograms.
According to the passport, the Slingshot should shoot passengers up to a hundred in 4.5 seconds, and the top speed exceeds 200 km/h, but in practice it is almost impossible to achieve such figures. The only driving wheel is to blame. It is made in specially developed rubber Kenda Slingshot (255/35 R20). On the first three gears it is not difficult to turn the wheel, even with the traction control on.
In terms of safety, the Slignshot is also a hybrid. There are three-point belts fixed in the center of the cockpit, water-repellent seats, ABS, traction control and ESP. But the Slingshot has no airbags, a roof over the head and a full-fledged windshield.
